Does converting CBR to CBZ reduce image quality?
No. CBR and CBZ are both archive containers — the pages inside are ordinary JPEG or PNG images. The conversion unpacks the RAR archive and repacks the exact same image files into a ZIP archive, so every page is byte-for-byte identical to the original. Nothing is re-encoded, resized or recompressed.
Why is my CBZ file larger than the CBR it came from?
RAR generally compresses a little better than ZIP. Because comic pages are already-compressed JPEGs, neither format can squeeze them much further, so the difference is usually only a few percent. We write CBZ at DEFLATE level 6, which is the standard balance between size and speed.
Will my comic reader definitely open the CBZ?
Almost certainly. CBZ is just a ZIP archive with a different extension, and every major reader supports it — Panels, Chunky, YACReader, ComicRack, Kavita, Komga, Calibre and Tachiyomi included. CBR requires RAR support, which is proprietary and missing from several readers, which is the main reason people convert.
Does the page order stay correct?
Yes. Pages are sorted using natural numeric ordering, so page2.jpg correctly comes before page10.jpg rather than after it — a common failure in tools that sort filenames as plain text.
Can you convert a password-protected or DRM-locked CBR?
No. Encrypted RAR archives cannot be opened without the password, and DRM-protected comics from stores like ComiXology or Marvel Unlimited use a separate protection layer entirely. Remove the password first if it is your own file.
